Developing Healthy Gambling Habits

You love gambling. The thrill is in the cards, the competition, and that final five minutes when the round surprises even you and turns completely to your favor. Nothing is as rewarding as knowing you came, played, and conquered. Oh, and of course the payoffs are an added bonus. You've earned quite a lot since you won the horse race, the basketball game, and those last few games of poker. You should probably go home before your luck runs out…but your hands are itching for another game. Should you risk it?

Risk what you can afford to lose. If you know the house bills haven't been paid and your son needs a new shirt, then set aside for those necessities before you leave your house. Don't bring it to the Casino. Otherwise, you might fool yourself into thinking that you can use the money and win it back later on. But you're not sure of that. The most obvious truth of gambling: nothing's for certain.

Once you've begun gambling, you pretty much get an idea of how you'll do for the rest of the night. Whether you're winning or losing, at least you're free of the worry that you're spending more money than you can afford. If you go home empty handed, be thankful that you still have a house to go home to because you paid the bills and a son waiting up for you to thank you for the new shirt and whatever amount you lose in the Casino you can consider payment for a night of satisfying entertainment. But if that's not enough to keep you happy, then know when to stop. Stop when you've got only enough dollars to buy yourself a large box of pizza. At least you have something to look forward to. And if you're feeling generous, order it take away and share it with your family.

Don't put so much importance in winning. Take into consideration that for there to be winners, there has to be losers. Don't obsess yourself into playing your money away until you win at least one game. Save your money and try again next time. You're bound to be lucky some time.

Gambling can be fun if you think of it as what it is---entertainment. Don't let it take the place of a regular job because though you're lucky today, that doesn't mean you'll be lucky tomorrow. By prioritizing immediate concerns and rewarding yourself for your self-control, you are well on your way to developing healthy gambling habits.
